When I began doing email marketing I would walk into a business and ask a few questions to the owner like: “How do you stay in touch with your customers” or I would explain that my company provides “email marketing solutions” to help bring customers back in the door. In nearly every case the owner would look at me dazed and confused – not understanding what it was I was talking about.
In many cases upon explanation and a breakdown of how the service works for businesses owners and managers would often think of the service as a plush add on to their marketing but not necessarily a vital component.
I’m reminded of how business owners used to think about web sites even as short as 10 years ago – “a nice thing but not necessary”. Now a business without a web site is like a business without a telephone – you’ve just got to have one!
The email marketing component of a company’s marketing plan is much the same way – in another 5 years companies that don’t offer this component to their customers will be on the losing end of building their business. Customers today assume that businesses are going to have an email communication device of some sort to serve them. Businesses today need every edge they can get over their competitors, and email marketing is one tool that is inexpensive, proven effective and very much a staple in the new marketing era of today.
